Terronova is developing supplementary cementitious materials from underutilized mining and industrial byproducts, starting with fayalite-rich slag from the Northern Ontario region.

The Challenge

Concrete has a carbon problem.

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world after water. Cement production is difficult to decarbonize because it relies on high-temperature heating and carbon-containing raw materials. The cement sector produced about 4,158 million tonnes of cement in 2022, and cement is commonly estimated to contribute around 8% of global CO₂ emissions.

Why It Matters

Turning industrial byproducts into useful materials.

Many mining and industrial byproducts are stockpiled or underused. Terronova is exploring whether these materials can be processed into practical cement replacement inputs, helping reduce cement demand while creating value from existing industrial residues.
